West Columbia is a city along the western bank of the Congaree River, directly across from downtown Columbia. It combines a historic mill-town heritage with a growing riverfront district and suburban neighborhoods. Pronounced “West Co-lum-bee-uh.”

History
Originally known as Brookland, the area was renamed West Columbia in 1938 to emphasize its connection to the state capital across the river. The city developed around textile mills and railroads in the 19th and 20th centuries and has recently focused on revitalization of its riverfront and downtown areas.

West Columbia is served by Lexington School District Two. Schools in the area include Saluda River Academy for the Arts, Northside Middle, and Brookland-Cayce High School.

West Columbia links directly to downtown Columbia via several bridges, putting the commute at less than 10 minutes. The city also has quick access to I-26, I-20, and I-77, as well as Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
