ROSEWOOD/SHANDON

Rosewood and Shandon represent two of Columbia’s oldest and most established in-town neighborhoods, located just south and southeast of the University of South Carolina. Known for their tree-lined streets, highly walkable layouts, and historic homes, these adjacent areas seamlessly blend traditional neighborhood charm with urban convenience. The combined Shandon and Rosewood area offers a vibrant mix of architectural styles, ranging from early 20th-century cottages and classic bungalows to larger brick estates. Shandon is famous for its mature trees, wide sidewalks, and expansive front porches—a testament to a time when planting trees and building porches took priority over parking lots. Rosewood anchors the community with active green spaces like Owens Field Park and the Rosewood Community Center.

Residents enjoy immediate access to the bustling shopping, dining, and nightlife of Devine Street and Five Points, alongside popular local traditions like the annual Rosewood Crawfish Festival.

History

Shandon began development in the late 1890s as one of Columbia’s first planned streetcar suburbs, with its name believed to be inspired by Shandon, Ireland. As Columbia continued expanding beyond its original downtown grid, Rosewood developed throughout the early to mid-20th century. Today, both neighborhoods have successfully preserved their historic streetscapes and distinctive character alongside modern updates.

Located entirely within the City of Columbia in Richland County, both neighborhoods are served by Richland School District One. Depending on the specific address, local schools may include:
