Shandon is one of Columbia’s oldest and most established in-town neighborhoods, located just southeast of downtown and adjacent to the University of South Carolina. Known for its tree-lined streets, historic homes, and walkable character, Shandon remains one of the city’s most recognizable neighborhoods. Pronounced “SHAN-don.”

Community Vibe
Shandon combines historic character with convenient access to downtown Columbia, the University of South Carolina, and nearby commercial districts. The neighborhood features sidewalks, mature trees, neighborhood parks, and a mix of architectural styles ranging from early 20th-century cottages to larger brick homes. Its proximity to Devine Street, Five Points, and downtown provides easy access to shopping, dining, and local events. Human beings spent more than a century planting trees and building front porches here instead of parking lots, which occasionally proves civilization can make good decisions.

History
Shandon began developing in the late 1890s as one of Columbia’s first planned streetcar suburbs. Much of the neighborhood grew during the early and mid-20th century as Columbia expanded beyond the original downtown grid. The area’s name is believed to have been inspired by Shandon in Ireland. Today, many of the neighborhood’s historic homes and streetscapes remain intact, contributing to its longstanding identity within Columbia.
